Polysaccharides and oligosaccharides are used in research, biochemical enzyme assays and analytical applications.
They can act as native substrates for the determination of enzymatic activities. The use of specific enzymes allows the breakdown of sugars into fragments of polysaccharides or oligosaccharides.
The sugar content may be quantified by the use of a viscometer, by chromatography (HPLC), by ion chromatography (HPAEC-PAD) or by reducing sugar analysis method.
They are widely used as chromatographic standards for HPLC/HPAEC-PAD analysis or as defined substrates in enzyme characterisation studies. Borohydride reduced oligosaccharides are also available in certain classes for the specific purpose of successfully performing reducing sugar assays in which the native oligosaccharides, themselves being reducing sugars, can produce a high blank absorbance value thereby decreasing the sensitivity of the assay.
